TRAINING DESCRIPTION & PARTICIPANT OUTCOMES

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge in adults ages 18 and over. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy, providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental health or substance use challenge.

By the end of the training, Certified First Aiders will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider. 
  • Identify the impact of mental health and substance use challenges on the wellbeing of American adults. 
  • Explain that recovery from a mental health or substance use challenge is possible. 
  • Describe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving first aid. 
  • Explain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE). 
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults. 
  • Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health and substance use challenges. 
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario where a person shows early signs of a mental health or substance use challenge. 
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario where a person shows worsening signs of a mental health or substance use challenge. 
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a crisis scenario where a person shows signs of a mental health or substance use crisis. 
  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non- crisis situation.

HOW TO BECOME A CERTIFIED MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDER (MHFA)

Use the the appropriate button below to register as an individual or as a private group. 

All registered learners are given private access to their own Mental Health First Aid online dashboard to access learning materials, their 2-hour self-paced online course, and instructions to participate in the 7-hour Live Instructor-Led portion of the training. The Live Instructor-Led session is scheduled directly with private groups and are available virtually or in-person. Supplementary live instruction-led sessions may be arranged for large groups if needed. Individual participants are matched to a live session that best meets the availability they list during their registration process. 

All learners must complete all pre-work and live instruction in order to successfully complete the training and earn certification. 

Training Package Options

A minimum of 8 participants or a flat fee of $2,000.00 is required for private group training.
