MHFA Training & Certification Benefits

Training & Certification Process

During your registration, you will be prompted to provide your (and your group members') first and last names and email addresses. All registered participants are then emailed:

☑️ 2-hour self-paced Pre-Work MHFA Online Course

☑️ 7-hour Live (Virtual or In-Person) Instructor-Led training scheduling


Participants must complete all Pre-Work and the Live Instructor-Led training in order to successfully earn certification. Supplementary Live Instructor-Led sessions may be arranged with organizations if needed. 

Participants who complete the Mental Health First Aid training will be registered as a certified Mental Health First Aider in the national database and will receive their official certification via the email provided.

Self-Paced Online Pre-Work: MHFA Introduction

The Mental Health First Aid Introduction is a self-paced e-learning course that consists of five segments. The e-learning portion of the training is delivered through your private access to the MHFA Connect learning dashboard and should take approximately two hours for you to complete on your own. Completion of this pre-work is required before you attend your Live Instructor-Led Training. You will learn the following during this pre-work phase:

  1. Overview of Mental Health First Aid. 
  2. Mental Health and Mental Disorders. 
  3. Role of the Mental Health First Aider and Self-care. 
  4. Common Mental Disorders in the U.S. 
  5. Recognizing Signs and Symptoms


Live Instructor-Led Training: MHFA Skills Application 

The Mental Health First Aid Skills Application portion of the course will take 7 hours including breaks. This live training (facilitated in-person or virtually) consists of the following seven Instructor-Led segments: 

  1. Welcome to Mental Health First Aid. 
  2. Mental health and mental disorders. 
  3. Role of the Mental Health First Aider and self-care. 
  4. Common mental disorders in the United States. 
  5. Recognizing signs and symptoms. 
  6. Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE). 
  7. MHFA for early signs and symptoms




  • Renew in 3 Years

    A First Aider certification is valid for three years. But don’t worry — recertification is simple. When your three-year anniversary approaches, you will receive an email with recertification instructions.

  • Renew Online

    You can renew your certification online in only 60 minutes by refreshing your skills and making sure you’re still prepared to provide support for someone in your community who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge.
